This is my last message from me as your President. I want to thank the membership for your support for this current year. I welcome Joe Maltese as your new President for the 2009-2010 association year. I am not going far as I will be serving as immediate past president and do plan to still be active in the association. We are putting our strategic plan together for the new year. We will still continue to focus on the members benefits of Advocacy, Professional Development and Practice Resources. Remember, the association’s business is to help members grow their businesses. So get involved or come to a meeting to see for yourself! The last meeting of our fiscal year brings an invaluable speaker, Dan Allison, "Change Your Business Thru Focus Groups." I urge all members to attend, and bring a guest. Let's take advantage of quality speakers, such as Dan, to encourage others to join.
Best Regards, Chris

Featuring the Installation of our 2009-2010
The Money Code founder Dan Allison dedicated his early career to the mental health industry with a focus in behavioral psychology. After achieving Master’s level education in the field, he sold a successful chain of behavioral health clinics and moved into the financial services industry. After watching several companies struggle, Dan used his knowledge of human behavior and business to create a successful system involving the integration of focus groups into his business models. Through years of using focus groups to better understand his clients and prospects, Dan packaged his knowledge and began educating other businesses in the financial services industry on the benefits of incorporating focus groups into a successful relationship-driven business model. From large corporations to individual practices, Dan brings a common sense approach to building a better business. A published author in both the mental health and financial services fields, Dan points out the truth... they are two very similar fields. No gimmicks, no nonsense, just a refreshing look at why consumers think the way that they do. The cost is $20.00. NAIFA-Jacksonville members who RSVP by Friday, June 19th, the cost is only $15.00! Make reservations NOW at www.naifa-jacksonville.org! Our first "interactive event" for our Young Advisors Team (YAT) is scheduled for 5:30 PM on Monday, June 29th. This should provide ample time in order for everyone to plan to participate. For many years, NAIFA - Jacksonville has committed to the one mile north of JTB on Belfort Road to be maintained. We need to know the exact number of volunteers, in order for us to be able to provice enough supplies. This generally takes about an hour of our time, given we have sufficient help. Let's plan to meet at the parking lot of the Capitas Financial building around 5:15 on that day. Please email me your agreement to commit to this first event to jason.borek@capitasfinancial.com. Looking forward to a fun, viable, and visible event, and for the value it brings to our community!

No experience required, all training provided! Some of you have already volunteered to help so please disregard this message if that's the case. We look forward to working with you at the conference and greatly appreciate your support! If you haven't already volunteered, and if you’re planning to attend the conference and can spare some time to help, please let me know as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you soon! Suppose, after you propose that your prospect purchase a DI policy to protect his or her income, he or she says, “I have Group LTD at work.” Is that the end of your sale? Of course not! Here’s why. A typical LTD plan might replace 60 percent of base salary, up to a maximum amount of perhaps $5,000. That leaves several points for you to make. First, ask your prospect if he/she currently lives on 60 percent of income. Virtually no one does. Second, point out that LTD benefits are typically taxable. That reduces the net effect of the benefit to 40 - 50 percent of income. Next, since typically only base salary is covered, any bonus or other incentive comp is excluded. Ask if he or she spends that bonus each year. Finally, since benefits are capped at some amount ($5,000 in my example), only the first $100,000 of compensation in this example is insured ($100,000 x 60% / 12 = $5,000). Let’s look at an example. Assume your client is covered by the LTD plan described above and earns $135,000 annually, of which $20,000 is bonus income: $135,000 / 12 = $11,250 per month. Since the LTD plan is capped at $5,000, the gross benefit is only 44% of monthly income. Then, to compound the problem, taxes are due on the $5,000. The solution is to purchase a supplemental DI policy to replace the lost income. In this example, he or she could purchase an additional $3,000 per month of individual DI coverage, bringing his or her income replacement ratio to 71 percent. So the next time you hear the objection, “I have Group LTD,” remember that 60 percent is not always 60 percent and it is rarely enough!
NAIFA's Manager’s Membership Award recognizes organizations that support a strong financial services industry by supporting NAIFA and its efforts. They also receive a certificate for display, a congratulatory letter from the national presidents of NAIFA and GAMA International, a commemorative lapel pin and an exclusive gift from The LIFE Foundation.
